Committee members

Victòria Gras, President

Born in Barcelona in 1971, Viqui moved to Melbourne with her Australian partner in 2003. She has been involved with the Casal since then: as a member, Secretary and ordinary member. She became President in august 2011. At present, she work as a researcher and lecturer at the School of Languages and Linguistics of Monash University. She also gives presentations on Bilingualism and Maintenance of Home Languages. In her spare time, she likes to read, exercise and get lost in some exhibition or other in the city of Melbourne. She has two children.

Marina Mateos, Vice-president

Angela Amorós, Secretary

Montse Becker, Treasurer

Born in Esparraguera (Barcelona) I arrived in Australia January 1973 with husband Rod Barber and have a daughter from that marriage. After a few years not being able to speak the language for lacking of catalan aquantancies, it was not until 1986 that I decided to organise that historical Picnic on the 27th April, Moreneta's Day when about 40 Catalans got together, which followed with the start of the Casal. I held the position of Secretary for many years and took the Presidency from 2009 to 2011. At present I am looking after the Casal's finances as the Treasurer.
After 50 years in the work force as Accounts Payable I have finally retired and enjoy travelling with our caravan around Australia with my second husband Wolfgang Becker for periods of one to four months at the time. In my spare time, I enjoy going to the cinema, playing cards, physical exercise, line dancing, fishing and a spot of golf. When I am not travelling you will find me at the Casal's Library most Thursdays from 12 to 1 pm.

Sara Bosch, Vocal

Originally from Barcelona, Sara has worked as a journalist in Europe and India for different media outlets. She arrived in Australia in 2008 and since then has worked at this Casal and at the University of Melbourne as a Communications and Research Officer. Among other ideas and plans, Sara is currently engaged in a range of photographic projects and developing www.SpanishAustralia.org, the first free online magazine featuring a selection of Spanish cultural events and businesses based in Australia.

Stewart King, Ordinary member

I come from an Australian Anglo-Irish background, but I became interested in Catalan culture towards the end of the 1980s. As part of my undergraduate degree and doctorate I have undertaken studies in Catalan language and literature at universities in Australia and Catalonia. Currently I am Senior Lecturer in Spanish and Catalan Studies at Monash University, where I am lucky to be able to teach the richness of Catalan culture to Australian students (http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/spanish/staff/sking.php). I often return to conduct research and to give classes or seminars on Catalan literature at universities in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands and, of course, to see many close friends.

Josee Canals, Ordinary member

My name is Josephine Canals and I was born in Melbourne in 1924. My parents both came from Barcelona.
My father, Joseph Villa, arrived in Australia in 1910 and my mother Rosa Galimany, along with her parents, arrived in 1911.
In 1947 I married Jack Canals, whose parents also came from Barcelona. His father, Michael Canals, arrived here in 1912 and his mother, Delores Ventura in 1922.
Jack died in 1983. We have six children, 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
I am a founding member of the Casal and have served on every management committee since its foundation in 1986.

Elisenda Avendaño, Ordinary member

This girl from Barcelona arrived in Melbourne at the end of 2009, alongside her aussie husband. With the very little spare time she has left (courtesy of her naughty twins) she is still able to do plenty of things, such as manage the Casal's new website. Just ask her for anything, she will never give you a no for an answer.
