Welcome

The Catalan Centre of Victoria is a meeting place for the Catalan- speaking people of Melbourne and Australia as well as for enthusiasts
for Catalan culture. At the same time we contribute to the promotion
of the language, history and culture of Catalonia.

The members of this centre have met since 1986 in Melbourne to celebrate our traditional festivities. We also get together to celebrate
extraordinary events like the "Made in Catalonia" Film Festival.

We have a library where information about Catalonia in English, Catalan and Spanish is available on request. The Catalan Centre of Victoria is a recognized member of the official Catalan Communities Abroad Unit by the Government of Catalonia.

The word “casal” is a Catalan word used to describe a cultural centre which promotes the customs and language of Catalonia, situated in the north- eastern region of Spain. Barcelona is Catalonia’s capital city. Together with Spanish, Catalan is the official language of Catalonia and
it is one of four co-official languages within Spain (it is not a dialect!)
and it is spoken by ten million people including many within Andorra, Valencia and the Balearic Islands.

Catalonia has always been culturally and scientifically dynamic.
It has produced many internationally well known people in their fields:
the painter Salvador Dalí, the singers Josep Carreras, Victòria dels Àngels and Montserrat Caballé, architect Antoni Gaudí and medical pioneer Josep Trueta are amongst the best known.
